About the Owners
The Kurtz family has a long history in the construction business, spanning over half a century. It started in 1953 when Grandpa Ron secured his first construction job in Cleveland, OH. Despite his untimely passing after moving to Atlantic Beach, FL, his passion and attention to detail were inherited by his son, John. After graduating from Fletcher High School, John began working as a bricklayer but soon decided to start his own business due to being taken advantage of as a laborer.
In 1981, John founded Kurtz Contractors, initially specializing in block masonry and serving the Jacksonville and Beaches areas. He later expanded into building upscale custom homes under Kurtz Custom Homes, emphasizing client relationships and making them the center of the design team. In 1989, John partnered with his brother-in-law, Guy Stark, to establish Kurstar Construction, focusing on small to medium-sized commercial projects across Florida.
In 2005, John was diagnosed with Focal Nephrotic Syndrome, but despite facing health challenges and a severe recession, he persevered to support his family and deliver quality work to his clients. Unfortunately, John passed away in 2015, leaving his son, Matt, to continue his legacy.
Matt obtained a contractor’s license to complete his father’s unfinished projects and subsequently became a third-generation Kurtz builder. In March 2016, he founded Kurco Construction, Inc., with the support of industry veteran Jason Green. Matt and Jason aim to carry on the family values while embracing a modern approach, envisioning Kurco as Jacksonville’s next generation of home and commercial building contractors. They emphasize quality, hard work, and customer satisfaction as they build a better future for Northeast Florida. The Kurco crew is prepared and excited for the future with their bold new vision, leadership, and expanded services.
